Indian Elections Date Announced

1. All were waiting with bated breath for Indian Elections Date and same have been announced by N Gopalaswami, Chief Election Commissioner. It also means that the model code of conduct comes into practice and that is the reason a hefty DA rise has been given before the announcement. Election commision will be using photo identity card in these elections.

2. He has stated that Lok Sabha elections will take place in 5 phases between April 16 to June 1 as the main aim is to ensure that the new govt is formed before 02 June when the term of present govt ends. The elections first phase will be executed on April 16, 2009 and will cover 124 constituencies. Phase two will be on April 23, 2009 and will cover 141 seats. The Phase three will be on April 30, 2009 and will cover 107 seats. The phase four and five will be held on May 7 and May 13, 2009 and will cover 85 and 86 seats respectively. Vote counting for elections will begin on 16 May 2009.

3. Presently 14th Lok Sabha term is in progress and more than Rs 16000 Crore will be spent on elections which will act as morale booster for the economy.

4. Total electorate for Lok Sabha polls is at 714 million and 499 of 543 Lok Sabha seats newly delimited.

5. The detail of the dates for elections date vise is as appended below:
Jammu and Kashmir and Uttar Pradesh — on all five dates.
Bihar — April 16, 23, 30 and May 7
Maharashtra — April 16, 23, and 30th April
West Bengal — April 30, May 7 and 13th May
Andhra Pradesh and Assam– April 16 and 23
Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh– April 23 and 30
Manipur and Orissa — April 16 and 23
Punjab — May 7 and 13
Jharkhand — April 16 and 23
Arunachal Pradesh, Kerala, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Chhattisgarh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep — April 16
Goa and Tripura — April 23
Gujarat, Sikkim, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, and Daman and Diu — April 30
Delhi, Haryana and Rajasthan — May 7.
Himachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Chandigarh and Puducherry — May 13.
